The Course: Heritage Kuching Before Dawn
The race starts and finishes in central Kuching. In 2026 that was the boulevard of the MBKS (Kuching South City Council) building [1]; the 2027 race moves a short way to Dewan Masyarakat on Jalan Padungan [2]. The organiser bills the routes as a tour of the city's heritage: old buildings, riverside views and the murals promoted by the two city councils [1].
Both the 21.1 km and the 10 km routes are AIMS-certified [1], so the distance is right and a time here counts. With a 4am flag-off, a half marathoner runs most of the course in the dark; the 10 km starts at 6am, closer to first light [3].
The Weather: Warm, Saturated and Still
Kuching airport recorded 25°C at 4am on race morning, with a dew point of 24°C, 94% humidity and no wind [4]. Nothing changed for the next four hours: it was still 25°C at 7.30am, and at 8am, when the half marathon closed, humidity reached 100% [4]. Only after that did it warm up, to 28°C at 9am [4].
A dew point of 24°C to 25°C means sweat barely evaporates, and with no wind there is nothing to help it. Most of the field finished before the sun had any effect, so the race is warm rather than hot, but plan for a slower time than on a cool morning and drink early.
The 2027 race is in April rather than late July [2], so check the forecast in race week rather than relying on the 2026 readings.
Cut-offs and Finisher Items
The cut-offs are generous: four hours for the 21.1 km, two hours for the 10 km and one hour for the 5 km fun run [3]. Both competitive distances are chip-timed; the 5 km is not [3].
Every 21.1 km finisher inside the cut-off gets a medal and a finisher jersey, on top of the event jersey, and the first 100 finishers get a special top-100 jersey [3]. The 2026 medal design, called "Postage Stamp Legacy", drew on Kuching's heritage and wildlife, from the Irrawaddy dolphin to the stained glass of St Peter's Cathedral [1].
How Fast the Field Is
The race has separate open and national categories. The 21 km Men's National category was won in 1:16:55 in 2026, a time that was also good enough for third in Men Open; second place, taken by the previous two years' champion, was 1:17:54 [5]. So in 2026 it took faster than 1:16:55 to win the open race, and a sub-1:18 to reach the national podium.
RM61,000 in prize money was spread across the competitive categories [1]. Most of the field runs for the experience, though: the oldest runner in 2026 was 82, had started racing at 71, and was back for a second year [5].
Race Weekend Logistics
In 2026, race packs were collected on the Friday and Saturday before the race, 11am to 6pm, at the Pullman Kuching [3]. For 2027 the collection dates and venue had not been announced when this was written.
Seven in ten runners in 2026 were from Sarawak, but one in ten came from abroad [1]. The 2026 race was timed to coincide with the Kuching Food Festival [1]; with the 2027 race moving to April, that pairing may not repeat.
Should You Enter the 2027 Race?
Yes, if you want a certified, chip-timed half marathon with a generous cut-off, a finisher jersey and a weekend in Kuching. It suits first-time half marathoners and runners who want a relaxed race abroad.
Think twice if you want a fast time in cool air: the 2026 race was run at close to 100% humidity with no breeze.
The 2027 race is on Sunday 18 April from Dewan Masyarakat, Jalan Padungan [2]. Nobody from this site ran the race. This review draws on the organiser's race information, local reporting before and after the race, and airport weather records.
