A City Day Race, Run Before Dawn
The Borneo Half Marathon has been held since its inception in 2020 in conjunction with Kota Kinabalu City Day, which commemorates the town attaining city status in February 2000 [1]. That civic anchor explains both its timing and its shape: it is a municipal celebration that happens to be a road race, co-organised by the Kinabalu Running Club and Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, the city hall itself [1].
The practical consequence for a runner is that the race gets the city centre rather than an industrial ring road. The 2026 edition started and finished at Padang Merdeka, the open square in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, and was flagged off at 5.30am with more than 4,000 participants [3]. Sabah's assistant minister to the chief minister, the mayor of Kota Kinabalu and the city hall's chief director all attended, which is a reasonable proxy for how seriously the road closures are taken [3].
For 2027 the date is Sunday 31 January [1][2]. That is marginally earlier than the 8 February slot the 2026 edition occupied [3], so if you are booking flights around City Day itself, check the civic calendar rather than assuming the race and the celebration fall on the same weekend.
Padang Merdeka, and an Hour Earlier Off the Line
The 2027 start is at Padang Merdeka on Jalan Padang, Kota Kinabalu [2]. The half marathon goes at 4.30am and the 10.5 km at 5.30am [2]. That is an hour earlier for the longer race than 2026's single 5.30am flag-off [3], and the reason is the obvious one: Kota Kinabalu sits a few degrees north of the equator, and a 21 km run that is still going at eight in the morning is a materially harder race than one finishing at six.
A 4.30am start also reshapes the night before. Race pack collection is scheduled for 29 and 30 January, with the venue still to be confirmed at the time of writing [2], so the collection trip is a separate errand on the Friday or Saturday rather than something to fold into race morning. Plan on being awake by three.
Both distances start and finish at the same city-centre venue [2], which keeps the logistics simple: one place to leave a bag, one place to meet people, and a finish within walking distance of most of the hotels in the middle of town.
Two Distances, and the Change From 11 km to 10.5 km
The 2027 edition offers a 21 km half marathon and a 10.5 km run [1][2]. Each is split into open, junior veteran, veteran and senior veteran age categories [2], so you are placed against runners of roughly your own age rather than against the whole field -- a structure the 2026 edition also used, alongside a men's and women's split and an Intercity Mayor's Cup [3].
The shorter distance has moved. In 2026 the second option was an 11 km [3]; for 2027 it is billed as 10.5 km [1][2]. Half a kilometre is not going to change anyone's plans, but it is worth knowing if you are comparing a personal best across the two years, because they are not the same course length.
Note also what is not here: there is no full marathon. That distance belongs to the Borneo International Marathon, a separate event from the same club held in Kota Kinabalu in May, offering 10 km, 21 km and 42 km [4]. If you were searching for a Sabah marathon and landed here, that is the race you want.
The Kinabalu Running Club Behind It
The Kinabalu Running Club is the through-line between Sabah's two significant road races. It organises the Borneo International Marathon, which was founded by Andrew Voon, Christopher Nielsen, Urs Weisskop and Simon Amos and first run on 12 October 2008 with 529 participants [4]. The club co-organises the half marathon with Kota Kinabalu City Hall as a separate event with its own categories [4].
That matters when you are judging an event you have not run. A club that has been putting on a marathon in the same city since 2008 is not learning road closures, timing or water stations from scratch, and the half marathon inherits that operational base rather than building its own. The seven countries represented in the 2026 field [3] suggest the event has started to draw beyond Sabah on the strength of it.
Should You Target Borneo Half Marathon 2027?
Yes, if you want a 21 km in East Malaysia with a city-centre course, an experienced organiser and a field large enough to have atmosphere without being unmanageable. The combination of a municipal co-organiser, a pre-dawn start and a decade and a half of institutional experience through the Kinabalu Running Club is a more reassuring package than most half marathons of this size in the region.
Two practical caveats. Entry fees are not published on the registration listing at the time of writing [2], so treat cost as unknown rather than cheap. And the race pack collection venue is still to be confirmed [2] -- if you are flying in, that is a detail worth pinning down before you book a Friday arrival.
This listing was compiled from the organisers' own published information before the event took place. It is not a first-hand race report, and the sections above describe what has been announced rather than what it was like to run.
