Frequently asked questions

How long should I taper before a marathon?

Most marathon plans taper for 2-3 weeks, gradually cutting weekly mileage while keeping some intensity. Longer tapers suit higher-mileage runners; 2 weeks is often enough for lower-mileage or time-crunched training blocks.

When should I start tapering for a half marathon?

About 1-2 weeks out is typical for a half marathon -- enough to arrive fresh without losing fitness. Cut volume more than intensity, and keep a few short efforts at goal pace in the final week.

Do I need to taper for a 5K or 10K?

A short taper still helps -- roughly 3-7 days of reduced volume with legs kept sharp via a couple of short, faster efforts. Shorter races need less recovery buffer than a marathon, so the taper window is much smaller.

What should I do in race week?

Reduce training volume, prioritize sleep, keep meals familiar (nothing new the night before), lay out race-day gear early, and review the course and start logistics so race morning has one less thing to think about.
