Frequently asked questions

What is age grading in running?

Age grading converts a finish time into a percentage of the open-class, elite-level standard for that distance and gender, adjusted for the runner’s age. It lets a 60-year-old’s time be compared fairly against a 30-year-old’s, rather than compared directly.

How is age-graded percentage calculated?

Broadly: your finish time is adjusted by an age factor reflecting typical age-related performance decline, then compared to an elite reference time for that distance and gender. The result is expressed as a percentage -- higher is closer to elite, age-adjusted performance.

What is a good age-graded percentage?

Rough bands widely used by age-grading calculators: 50-60% is a solid recreational effort, 60-70% is competitive local/regional class, 70-80% is national class, and 80%+ starts to approach world class for that age group.

Does this use the official WMA age-grading tables?

No -- this uses an approximate, general age-decline model and approximate elite reference times, not the official World Masters Athletics tables. For certified age-grading (e.g. for masters records or rankings), use WMA’s published factors directly.
