Why the Mask Itself Deserves Its Own Guide
Most haze-season advice treats the mask as one line item among several -- check the PSI, maybe wear a mask, move indoors if it's bad. That undersells how much the specific mask matters: a cloth covering or a loose surgical mask does very little against PM2.5, the fine particulate that makes haze genuinely harmful to breathe, because the fibers simply aren't dense enough to catch particles that small. The rating printed on the mask, not the general category of 'mask,' is what determines whether it's doing anything useful.
That distinction matters more for runners than for someone wearing a mask on a commute, because running dramatically increases both breathing rate and the volume of air pulled past whatever's covering your face. A rating that's adequate for walking to the MRT doesn't automatically hold up the same way once heart rate and respiration climb during a run, which is the specific problem this guide is built around.
N95, KN95, N99: What the Numbers Actually Mean

At a hard running effort, where breathing rate and depth both increase substantially, that same resistance becomes a genuine limiter: most runners physically cannot sustain tempo or interval pace wearing a sealed N95, because the mask restricts airflow faster than a hard-working respiratory system can work around it.
This isn't a flaw in the mask -- it's the mechanism by which the mask filters air, and it applies to every respirator-rated mask, not just cheaper ones. Masks with an exhalation valve (letting warm, moist exhaled air escape without passing back through the filter) reduce fogging and CO2 buildup somewhat, which helps comfort on a slow effort, but they don't meaningfully change the inhale-side resistance that limits hard-effort breathing.
Where a Mask Actually Fits Into a Haze-Season Run
Given that trade-off, the realistic use case for a running-grade mask during haze season isn't the run itself -- it's the walk to and from a run, standing around at an outdoor event's start or finish corral, or a genuinely easy, conversational-pace effort where the mask's airflow resistance isn't the pace-limiting factor. For the actual hard training session, the honest options are moving it indoors or accepting the exposure at a distance and duration you've judged acceptable against that day's reading.
