Why Haze Season Is a Regional Running Problem
Southeast Asia's haze season is driven mainly by agricultural and land-clearing fires in Indonesia, typically peaking during the region's dry months (roughly July through October, though the exact window shifts year to year with rainfall patterns). Prevailing winds carry the smoke across the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea, so Singapore, Malaysia, and parts of southern Thailand and the Philippines can see air quality readings spike even when there's no fire anywhere near them.
For runners, that turns a normal training week into a judgment call most other regions never have to make: not just what to wear, but whether outdoor training makes sense that day at all. The gear below is built around that reality -- for the moderate-haze days where running outdoors is still reasonable, not the genuinely hazardous ones where the right move is indoors or rest.
Checking Before You Head Out
Singapore's National Environment Agency publishes the PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) hourly, and Malaysia's Department of Environment publishes the API on a similar basis -- both are free to check on your phone before a run, and both are far more reliable in the moment than judging air quality by eye. A portable PM2.5 monitor is the next step up for anyone training seriously through haze season: it gives you a real-time reading wherever you actually are, rather than the nearest official monitoring station's average.
As a rough rule of thumb used by regional health authorities: moderate readings are generally fine for most healthy adults to train through, but anyone with asthma, heart conditions, or other respiratory sensitivity should be more conservative, and everyone should treat a genuinely unhealthy reading as a signal to move training indoors rather than push through it.
Masks: What Actually Filters PM2.5
A regular cloth or surgical mask does very little against the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that makes haze genuinely harmful -- it's small enough to reach deep into the lungs, and stopping it requires a mask rated for it specifically. N95 and KN95 respirators are both rated to filter at least 95% of particles down to 0.3 microns, which covers PM2.5; the practical difference between them is fit (N95 uses a headband, KN95 typically uses ear loops), not filtration performance.
Wearing a proper respirator while actually running is uncomfortable and restricts breathing enough that most runners won't do it for a full session -- realistically, these masks earn their keep on the walk to and from a run, at an outdoor event's start/finish area, or on an easy day where you're moving slowly enough that mask-restricted breathing isn't the limiting factor.
The Honest Answer for Genuinely Bad Days
None of this gear is a substitute for simply not running outdoors when the air quality is genuinely unhealthy -- masks and monitors help you make a better-informed decision and manage the moderate range, not push through hazardous conditions safely. Most regional gyms and condominium fitness rooms see a real uptick in treadmill use during bad haze weeks for exactly this reason.
If you're training for a specific race during haze season, building a few flexible indoor sessions into your plan ahead of time -- rather than deciding in the moment whether to skip a run entirely -- makes it much easier to actually stick with training through a bad stretch instead of losing the week.
