Indonesia's Only Elite Label Race
The Maybank Marathon is Indonesia's only World Athletics 'Elite Label' road race, and has been listed in the Boston Marathon qualifying directory since 2013 -- a level of certification and organisational rigor that few Southeast Asian marathons can claim. A 4:30am Start Through Rice Paddies and Villages
The marathon starts around 4:30am to let runners catch the sunrise and get through the bulk of the distance before humidity builds. [1] The course winds through Balinese villages, rice paddies and rural roads in Gianyar Regency; earlier full-marathon editions started near Bali Safari Park before the first 10km along a dual carriageway toward Sanur. Feedback on independent race-review sites is consistently strong. Watch for Hillier Reroutes and Heat
Not every edition has been uniformly easy. A 2017 participant recap on some rerouted sections noted "there were plenty of instances where runners would rather walk than run the uphill portion." [3] And despite the early start, organisers themselves have publicly acknowledged Bali's hot, humid conditions when discussing race planning -- August in Gianyar typically runs 22-29°C with moderate humidity, so heat management still matters even with sunrise timing.

Should You Run It?
If you want one of Southeast Asia's most credentialed and best-reviewed marathons -- Boston-qualifying, Elite Label certified, and genuinely praised by repeat finishers for its cultural atmosphere -- the Maybank Marathon on 23 August 2026 earns its reputation. Just note that 2026 registration has already closed, so this year's edition is one to watch rather than enter, with 2027 registration worth marking on a calendar early.
