The Course: A Heritage Loop from the Governor's Office
Malioboro Run 2025 was held on Sunday 5 October, its fourth edition [1]. All three races started and finished at the Kepatihan complex, the Yogyakarta provincial government offices on Jalan Malioboro [2], at the west gate of the governor's office [3]. The route took in Jalan Malioboro, Vredeburg Fort, the Titik Nol Kilometer crossroads, the Plengkung Tarunasuro (Wijilan) gate, the Njeron Beteng quarter inside the Kraton walls, the colonial Kotabaru district and Panggung Krapyak [2][4].
The course moves around. The start was at the Inna Garuda hotel in 2022, at the regional parliament in 2023 and at Kepatihan in 2024 and 2025 [5]. The 2024 route went to different places, including Plengkung Gading, the corner bastions of the Kraton wall and the royal tombs at Kotagede [6].
For 2025 the organiser had the course measured and standardised by AIMS [2]. The bank's compliance director said the certified route could not be changed for the next three years [5], so the 2026 course should repeat the 2025 one. The official 2026 page still said route information would be announced soon [7].
The organisers dress the race up. A 10 km runner from Bali said everything from race-pack collection to the cheering on race day was wrapped in local culture, and ran a personal best of 50 minutes in an 8 kg costume [3].
Start Times, Cut-offs and Aid
The half marathon started at 4.45am, the 10 km at 5.15am and the 5 km at 5.30am [1]. The bank's president director said the area should be clear by about 9am [2]. The minimum age was 18 for the half and 10 km and 17 for the 5 km [1].
The 2026 rules give the half marathon three and a half hours, the 10 km two and a half and the 5 km one and a half, with further cut-offs on the course to be announced before race day [8][9]. The 2025 results fit those limits: the last half-marathon finisher crossed the line 3:29:57 after the gun, the last 10 km finisher 2:24:48 and the last 5 km finisher 1:18:37 [10]. Runners outside the limit get no medal and, in the half, no finisher jacket [9]. In 2025, 22 half marathoners did not finish and 5 were disqualified [10].
The rules put a drinks station every 2 to 3 km and at the finish [9]. Places are decided on gun time, not chip time [9]. For 2025 the organiser added start corrals for runners chasing a personal best [2], so seed yourself properly if you want a place.
The Roads: Traffic Beside the Course
Before flagging off the 5 km, Yogyakarta's governor, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, told runners to take care on the road because vehicles would be passing on their right or left [11]. Police and local officers were deployed to manage traffic and keep order along the route [1], and the rules put course security under the police and the transport department [9].
Keep to the side of the road the marshals give you, and do not assume every street on the loop is closed to traffic.
How Fast the Field Is
The men's half marathon was won in 1:13:56, from 1:15:38 and 1:15:44. Then came a ten-minute gap: fourth place was 1:25:05 and tenth 1:40:47. The women's race was won in 1:34:33, and the next two women, both in the masters category, ran 1:41:45 and 1:41:59; tenth was 1:58:59 [10]. Only 121 of the 1,013 half-marathon finishers broke two hours, and the median finish was about 2:30 [10]. Of those finishers, 817 were men and 196 women [10].
The 10 km was won in 32:58 by a man and 42:19 by a woman, with tenth places of 43:04 and 50:53. The 5 km winners ran 16:57 and 20:09 [10].
Prize money totalled Rp135 million in 2025, with Rp10 million for the half-marathon winner in each class, open and masters [4]. In 2024 the organiser defined masters as 40 and over [6]. The 2026 list pays Rp20 million to each open half-marathon winner, and winners must be Indonesian citizens with a Bank BPD DIY account [12].
Getting In: Sold Out in Two Days
The race has grown fast. It was capped at 3,500 runners in 2023 and 4,500 in 2024 [6]. For 2025, 7,000 places went on sale on 16 June through an online queue and sold out within two days [2]. The organiser said 73% of those registered came from outside the Yogyakarta region [2].
The other way in is the bank's Save for Run scheme: you lock money in a Bank BPD DIY savings account for 12 months in exchange for a place. For 2026 the deposit was Rp10 million for the half and Rp5 million for the 10 km or 5 km [8]. By race day in 2025, almost 400 people had already used it to secure a place for the following year [3].
For 2026 the regular fees were Rp850,000 for the half, Rp450,000 for the 10 km and Rp350,000 for the 5 km, and all three had sold out [13]. Entry for 2026 is open only to Indonesian citizens [9]. The bank's president director said some runners came from abroad in 2025 [2]. Entries cannot be refunded or passed to someone else, and you cannot change category [8].
Race Weekend Logistics
In 2025 race packs were handed out at Vredeburg Fort on the Friday before the race [2][14]. For 2026 collection is at the same fort on Friday 2 October, 1pm to 8pm, and Saturday 3 October, 10am to 8pm [7]. Packs cannot be posted and cannot be collected on race day [9].
Finishers in 2025 got a medal and an e-certificate, and every runner got a race jersey, a timing-chip bib, a tote bag, refreshments and insurance; the finisher jersey was for the half only [2]. For 2026 the half-marathon pack includes a finisher jacket [8].
Book a room early. The Yogyakarta hotel association said occupancy around Malioboro rose to between 70% and 85% over 3 to 5 October 2025 [11].
Should You Enter the 2026 Race?
Yes, if you are an Indonesian runner who wants a half marathon or 10 km that shows you Yogyakarta's old city, with an early start, a certified course and a field in which a good club runner can finish in the top ten. A man under about 1:40 or a woman under about 1:59 would have made the top ten in the 2025 half.
Think twice if you are not an Indonesian citizen, since 2026 entry is closed to you, or if you want fully closed roads. Most runners will not need the generous cut-offs; the challenge is getting a place.
