Why the Equator Changes the UV Math
The UV index scale most runners are used to treats anything above 8 as "very high" and reserves "extreme" (11+) for rare summer peaks. Near the equator, that extreme rating is closer to a routine midday reading for much of the year -- the sun sits more directly overhead, and there's no winter season to bring the average down the way there is in temperate climates. A run that starts at dawn to dodge the heat can still finish under UV levels that would be considered severe almost anywhere else.
The practical effect is that sun protection here isn't a seasonal add-on the way it is elsewhere -- it's a year-round default for any run that extends past early morning, regardless of how hot or cool the day feels.
Sunscreen That Survives Actual Sweat
Most sunscreens are formulated and tested for general daily wear, not for an hour or more of heavy sweating -- reapplication after heavy perspiration is the standard guidance on the label for a reason. A lightweight, water-resistant formula that doesn't feel heavy or greasy is more likely to actually get worn consistently on a run, which matters more than a marginally higher SPF number that sits unused in a drawer.
Sport-specific sunscreen sticks or roll-ons are worth considering for high-friction areas like the back of the neck and hairline, where a runner's own hands are less likely to reach evenly with a lotion mid-run.
Covering Skin Without Adding to the Heat Problem
The instinct to cover up more skin against UV directly conflicts with the region's other big constraint: heat and humidity, where more fabric usually means more trapped heat. UV-rated arm sleeves solve this reasonably well -- lightweight, breathable fabric that blocks UV specifically, removable the moment you're in shade or done with the exposed stretch of a route, rather than a long-sleeve shirt worn the whole run.
The same logic applies to hats and caps: a UPF-rated cap protects the scalp and face without the heat retention of a full-coverage hood, and it's the more practical choice for anyone running through the middle of the day rather than sticking to dawn and dusk.
Eyes Matter as Much as Skin
UV exposure to the eyes gets less attention than skin protection but matters just as much at these latitudes -- polarized sunglasses cut glare off wet or light-colored roads (a genuine hazard after one of the region's frequent downpours) in addition to blocking UV. No-slip construction matters more here than in a drier climate, since sunglasses that work fine on a dry temperate run tend to slide on a face that's sweating heavily for an hour or more.
Skipping sunglasses because a run starts before sunrise isn't a safe shortcut either -- by mid-run on many routes, the sun is high enough that the exposure adds up well before the finish.
