What Heart-Rate Zones Actually Are
A heart-rate zone system divides the range between resting and maximum heart rate into bands -- usually three to five -- that correspond to broad categories of training effort, from very easy to maximal. The point isn't the exact number of zones a given system uses; it's that zones convert a fuzzy feeling like "easy" or "hard" into a number a runner can actually check mid-run, rather than relying purely on how a pace feels, which can be misleading on a given day.
Zones are most useful as a classification tool for a training week as a whole: they let a runner see, in aggregate, roughly how much of the week was spent at low intensity versus how much drifted into a harder, more moderate effort -- exactly the kind of training-intensity distribution that research on recreational runners has studied directly[1].
Why Most "Easy" Runs Are Actually Run Too Hard

Even the revised formula comes with an important honesty caveat: any age-based formula is a population average, and individual maximum heart rates vary meaningfully from person to person at the same age -- the original research behind the revised formula itself reports a real margin of error. In practice, that means a formula-derived zone should be treated as a starting estimate to refine with lived experience, not a precise number to chase on a watch.
Connecting Zones Back to Easy Pace
